Learning Agreement

For my Extended Major Project I intend to work on a variety of productions to further the skills I gained during my Specialist Practise unit. My role as a Technical Supervisor was extremely successful, educational and enjoyable and I would like to push this pathway further to extend my knowledge and prepare me for industry.

Mother Courage and Her Children – Set Builder

For the first production of this semester I am working on Mother Courage and Her Children as a Set Builder. This is only a minimal role where I will be working alongside Richard McCabe as his assistant, and working with designer Kie Yamamoto to realise her designs. Due to time restrictions in between A Soldier’s Tale and Mother Courage, I was unable to do the technical drawings so will produce a Construction Journal for the build.

Taking on a small role for a production is a good way to prepare for industry to introduce the mind-set of working as a team and under the guidance of other people.

Road – Draughtsman and Set Builder

I enjoyed working on In Extremis and A Soldier’s Tale so much that I wanted to continue this pathway further and become more skilled. I chose to take on a lot of responsibility with the last AUCB Production, Road. I felt that this was the last opportunity to prove myself to future employers and practise my CAD skills further.

I will create a set of drawings for Road, all the construction drawings for the road segments and a concise and complete ground plan with front and side elevations. I will try my best to produce these quickly as to reflect the speed I would need to work at in industry.

As my CAD skills are quite developed from the last unit, I am unsure of what I will learn directly using AutoCAD, but any new challenges along the way I’m sure I will figure out.

Again, I will be working with Richard McCabe to realise the design, testing and pushing my carpentry skills. This will be documented in a form of a Construction Journal, as this proved successful with SDP. Additionally I will be dealing with budgeting and costing of materials, compromising the design if necessary yet keeping the creative vision unchanged.

It will be interesting working with Gareth Corke as he is a very hands on Director and likes to be involved with creative decisions. I will have to keep a very close working relationship with the Designer, Laura Davis to make sure I am on top of any changes that get made to the set that I need to be made aware of.

CAD Pad: Spatial Designer and Draughtsman

After Road I will be working with Adele Keeley to create several configurations of space for the CAD Pad refurbishment over summer. I will present my ideas to the tutors and will have technical drawings created on AutoCAD and developmental sketches to show my thought processes.

Placements in Industry

Richard McCabe has helped me achieve placements at two design and construction companies to help improve my technical drawing, my knowledge of construction and engineering and my skills in construction. This will start on the 25th March and continue for five weeks until the 27th April. I will be working at SetSquare Staging based in Mitchum, Surrey – a company that offers different aspects of set design in the commercial sector and have different client bases.

I will be working in the production office alongside Project Managers and Draughtsman and also in the workshop with carpenters, metalworkers and the paint shop.

I will diarise my time at SetSquare on my blog.

Aims:

A1       To provide you with the opportunities to exercise and enhance your           knowledge and abilities in the development of a body of creative and     technically competent work appropriate to your course aims and criteria       at Level 6.

A2       To provide opportunities for you to learn from the increased complexity      and rigour of creative production required for this unit.

A3       To encourage you to apply the advanced level of discipline and time          management which are required during the unit.

A4       To encourage you to work independently, albeit with supervision, in the    development of your work, in a way which reflects contemporary       professional practice. You are also encouraged to work effectively as a         team member where this is demanded by your project or subject       specialism.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this unit you will be able to:

LO1  Demonstrate the ability to rigorously apply specialist knowledge, understanding and creativity in the production of your extended major project.

LO2  Demonstrate the ability to manage the complexity of practice demanded by the extended major project by managing your time and work efficiently.

LO3  Demonstrate ability in the coherent use of various representation techniques, documentation and presentations to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

LO4  Demonstrate your awareness of the ethical, social and cultural issues appropriate to the concept of a responsible professional practitioner, whether working independently or as part of a team
